  23. It is not a daft question, and is actually rather frequently
  24. asked on this group.  There is no such thing as a generic
  25. Winsock "SLIP server" that can run as an independently loaded
  26. application over any Winsock implementation.

  28. What you need is a DOS or Windows TCP/IP stack implementation
  29. that supports multiple interfaces concurrently, and also supports
  30. routing between interfaces.  In the specific instance of SLIP
  31. routing, the multiple interfaces would be the ethernet interface, 
  32. and the serial (ASY) interface.

  34. An *excellent* Winsock compliant TCP implementation that fulfils
  35. this requirement is SuperTCP from Frontier Technologies.  I have
  36. used SuperTCP 3.0 and 4.0 and think very highly of the product.

  38. A shareware/freeware option is to run some version of KA9Q on
  39. the PC (under DOS), and use KA9Q as a dial-in SLIP server/router.
  40. If you are to pursue this route, I highly recommend taking a look
  41. at Karl Heinz Weiss's SLIPLOG package available via FTP and
  42. Gopher from "mvmpc9.ciw.uni-karlsruhe.de".  Karl's package will 
  43. work over any KA9Q compile that supports packet drivers.  I have 
  44. tested it over my own compiles, and have found the performance 
  45. to be quite satisfactory.  In addition the security/access-control 
  46. that his package provides is quite welcome as well.

  48. KA9Q is free for educational and ham use, but others must pay
  49. the primary author (Philip Karn Jr., KA9Q) a shareware fee.  He

  82. I don't think it had anything to do with it.  Try seeing if there
  83. is a .yourusername.pop file in your hosts mail directory.  POP servers
  84. traditionally copy your mailbox to .yourusername.pop while they transfer
  85. the mail and use that file as a lockfile.  If the session gets 
  86. interrupted, the lockfile can remain.  You can't get your mail
  87. again until the file is cleared.  You can append the .*.pop file
  88. to your normal mail file and try again, getting perhaps duplicate
  89. messages as the only downside.

  91. Sometimes rather large mail files will abort a POP session--some
  92. clients don't like mail messages over 60K, etc.
